*Managed service expertise with Snapshot technology – Best of both worlds!*

Ask a team why their staging environment is six months out of date and you’ll rarely hear "we don’t care." You’ll hear that refreshing it takes a day, someone must own the window, and there’s always something more urgent. Ask why a reporting query is pointed at production, and you’ll hear a version of the same thing.

These are not discipline failures. They are the predictable result of an assumption baked into how we’ve always worked with databases: that copying one means moving the data. Under that assumption, a copy of a multi-terabyte PostgreSQL database means streaming thousands of gigabytes for hours, sometimes days. Every isolated environment carries a real cost, so teams ration them. And when environments are rationed, work drifts back onto production.

NetApp is announcing the general availability of **Instaclustr PostgreSQL® on Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP**, a managed PostgreSQL offering that changes that math. Snapshots complete in seconds, reduce recovery time and enable new possibilities for managing mission-critical PostgreSQL workloads in the cloud. Fully managed by NetApp Instaclustr, built on open source.

*(Throughout this document, Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is referred to as FSx for NetApp ONTAP.)*

The power of FSx for NetApp ONTAP
---------------------------------

A NetApp Snapshot is a read-only, point-in-time image of a volume or file system. Applied to Instaclustr PostgreSQL, it captures full database state in seconds without copying data. NetApp® FlexClone then turns any snapshot into a near-instant, storage-efficient writable volume, which becomes an independent PostgreSQL cluster.

That’s a small technical statement with large organizational consequences. When a production-fidelity copy costs minutes instead of a day, the tradeoffs that pushed teams toward risky shortcuts simply stop existing.

Benefits of Instaclustr PostgreSQL® integration with FSx for NetApp ONTAP
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Integration with FSx for NetApp ONTAP has unlocked the following new functionalities for Instaclustr PostgreSQL® customers:

### PostgreSQL backups become routine, not an event

Snapshots are fast and space-efficient, which makes them simple to manage rather than something scheduled around. The practical effect is lower data-loss risk and backup and restore operations that can meet your RPO and RTO targets instead of aspiring to them.

### Testing moves off production

Teams can launch independent PostgreSQL clusters for development, QA, and reporting from production snapshots, whatever the dataset size. That means validating changes against real data shapes before deployment — catching the bugs that only appear at production scale, ahead of release rather than after it. Because that work happens on clones, it adds no load and no risk to the live instance. Production performance and stability stop being something the rest of the organization negotiates around.

### Analytics stop competing with transactions

Access to production data through clones means analytics, reporting, and dashboarding run without contending with production OLTP workloads. The long-standing tension between "we need current data" and "don’t touch the transactional system" resolves — not through better scheduling, but because both can be true at once.

How to get started
------------------

NetApp ONTAP FlexClone technology is available through the Instaclustr Managed Platform for all PostgreSQL clusters running on FSx for NetApp ONTAP.

Instaclustr does not charge for snapshotting features. FSx for NetApp ONTAP does carry different costs than Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) storage, paid either directly to AWS in Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) deployments or as part of node cost in Run In Instaclustr Account (RIIA) deployments.

Open the **backups and snapshots** section in the Instaclustr console for your Instaclustr PostgreSQL® on FSx for NetApp ONTAP cluster to begin. [Contact us](mailto:sales@instaclustr.com) with questions or to discuss how this fits your environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

### What is Instaclustr PostgreSQL on Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP?

Instaclustr PostgreSQL on Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP is a managed PostgreSQL on AWS offering that uses NetApp Snapshot and FlexClone technology to create fast, storage-efficient PostgreSQL snapshots, restores, and writable clones. It helps teams refresh development and testing environments, reduce backup and recovery time, and run analytics on production-like data without adding load or risk to production.

### How do PostgreSQL snapshots work with FSx for NetApp ONTAP?

With FSx for NetApp ONTAP, a NetApp Snapshot creates a read-only, point-in-time image of the underlying volume or file system. For Instaclustr PostgreSQL, that means the full database state can be captured in seconds without copying the data. Those snapshots can then be used for fast restores or as the source for writable clones.

### How can teams use PostgreSQL clones for development, testing, and reporting?

Teams can create independent PostgreSQL clusters from production snapshots for development, QA, reporting, and analytics. These clones give teams access to production-like data shapes without adding load or risk to the live production instance, helping them validate changes, refresh environments, and support reporting workflows more efficiently.

### What are the benefits of using FlexClone with Instaclustr PostgreSQL?

FlexClone turns a NetApp Snapshot into a near-instant, storage-efficient writable volume that becomes an independent PostgreSQL cluster. This helps reduce the time and storage overhead typically associated with database copies, making it easier to support testing, reporting, and analytics use cases.
