Cassandra Summit 2015

Stop by our booth at Cassandra Summit this year. Our team will be able to meet and discuss all things Cassandra.

Also don’t forget to come have a beer (or two) on us at the Booth Crawl and Keg Event at Booth 116 – September 22 from 5:30-7:30.

We also have three of our team members delivering presentations throughout the conference.

Securing Cassandra the right way

When: Thursday September 24th, 2015, 11:35 AM – 12:15 PM

Who: Ben Bromhead, CTO, Instaclustr

Ben Bromhead is the co-founder and CTO of Instaclustr, a Cassandra-as-a-Service company. Ben spends his days working closely with customers helping them to get the most from their Cassandra deployments.

Why: Security is often an afterthought; configured and applied at the last minute before rolling out a new system. Instaclustr has deployed Cassandra for customers with many different requirements.  From deployments in Heroku requiring total public access to private data centers, we will walk you through the steps in securing Cassandra the right way.

When and how to migrate from a relational database to Cassandra

When: Wednesday September 23rd, 2015, 4:20 PM – 5:00 PM

Who: Ben Slater, Chief Product Officer, Instaclustr

As Chief Product Officer, Ben is charged with steering Instaclustr’s development road map, overseeing production engineering and managing the production support team. Ben has over 20 years experience in systems development including previously as lead architect for the product that is now Oracle Policy Automation and over 10 years as a solution architect and project manager for Accenture. He has extensive experience in managing development teams and implementing quality controlled engineering practices.

Why: Many applications are initially developed using relational database technology before upsizing to Cassandra as they mature. This presentation will examine the indicators that it is time to start considering a migration away from relational and factors to consider when making the decision to move. We will then discuss different approaches for implementing the migration and how to plan, estimate and manage the work along with key risks and gotchas you may encounter.

Dockerizing Cassandra on Modern Linux

When: Thursday September 24th, 2015, 1:50 PM – 2:30 PM

Who: Adam Zegelin, Founding Software Engineer, Instaclustr

As Instaclustr’s founding software engineer, Adam provides the foundation knowledge of Instaclustr’s capability and engineering environment. Adam is also focused on providing Instaclustr’s contribution to the broader open source community on which our products and services rely, including Apache Cassandra, Apache Spark and other technologies such as CoreOS and Docker. Prior to founding Instaclustr, Adam worked on large-scale big data projects with Australian government agencies.

Why: In this session, Adam will discuss how Instaclustr integrates Docker containers in combination with modern linux technologies, including systemd and journald, to run an enterprise cloud-based hosting solution for DataStax Enterprise and Apache Cassandra. Adam will also discuss the merits of containerisation and how to complete integration with systemd required writing an additional Java Agent that is loaded into the Cassandra JVM.
