Lessons learned from running 1800 clusters

Instaclustr has a diverse customer base including Ad Tech, IoT and messaging applications ranging from small start ups to large enterprises. In this presentation we share our experiences, common issues, diagnosis methods, and some tips and tricks for managing your Cassandra cluster.

Load Testing Cassandra Applications

This presentation will walk through some of the key considerations for planning and running load test to ensure your Cassandra application will meet you expected scaling requirements. We will also walk through some examples of using the cassandra-stress tool to construct load test for real-life application scenarios.

Processing 50,000 events per second with Cassandra and Spark

Over the last 12 months, Instaclustr has developed a centralised system to capture and analysis monitoring metrics from its managed services fleet of well over 500 Cassandra and Spark nodes. While we entered into the exercise with plenty of experience provisioning and managing Cassandra and Spark, this was our first experience building a significant application. We’ll walk through some of the missteps we made and lessons learned along the way as well as sharing our current solution architecture.

Micro-batching: High-performance writes

This presentation will investigate how using micro-batching for submitting writes to Cassandra can improve throughput and reduce client application CPU load. Micro-batching combines writes for the same partition key into a single network request and ensures they hit the “fast path” for writes on a Cassandra node.

Everyday I’m scaling. . . Cassandra

This presentation will show how create truly elastic Cassandra deployments on AWS allowing you to scale and shrink your large Cassandra deployments multiple times a day.  Leveraging a combination of EBS backed disks, JBOD, token pinning and our previous work on bootstrapping from backups you will be able to dramatically reduce costs per cluster by scaling to match your daily workloads.

In app cryptography with Cassandra

Protecting data is hard, in-app cryptography is the best way to protect data in your cluster but comes with significant management and development overhead. On top of that you usually lose the ability to perform any meaningful operations on your data.  This presentation will run you through two approaches to using in-app cryptography within Cassandra whilst still maintaining the ability to do basic range queries.  This will cover homomorphic encryption using a custom Cassandra driver and secure multi-party computation using Baffle.io to protect data in Cassandra.
