How did you get started working in IT?

I have always had a very logical thought process, so working with computers always seemed like the obvious choice. After finishing my uni degree, I got a job working as a Systems Administrator for a couple of years, before coming over to Instaclustr as a Software Engineer.

What does your role as ‘Senior Software Engineer’ at Instaclustr entail?

I’m a Senior Software Engineer, which means I lead teams of developers who are working on adding features to our platform. I make decisions about which tools and technologies should be used to solve requirements and help develop some of our more junior developer’s skills.

What sort of training or education do you have?

Bachelor of Software Engineering from the Australian National University

How long ago did you join Instaclustr?

Just over two years ago

Why did you join Instaclustr?

I was excited to be part of a smaller, more agile software company. Instaclustr was generating a lot of interest after completing a funding round, and thought I would give it a go!

What’s your favourite part about the company?

The flexibility of the working arrangements, if I need to leave work early, come in late, or work from home, the work is always flexible enough to accommodate it.

What is a typical day like at your job?

My day starts with a Standup meeting, followed by a mix of designing up solutions to meet requirements, coding up the changes, and reviewing other developers code.

What is your favourite thing about working in a start-up company?

The speed at which we can make decisions, and implement changes. We have the right amount of process, which ensures the quality of code but also makes us agile enough to new problems with the right tools.

What skills or personal qualities are good for this job?

Being able to work as part of a team, with great communication skills. As with all coding jobs, a good head for problem-solving, and critical thinking

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The ability to work with, and learn more about exciting new opensource technologies such as Cassandra, Kafka, and Kubernetes.

What is your advice to someone interested in working for a company like Instaclustr?

Give it a go! Be a part of building something exciting, using some of the newest technologies, and see how rewarding the work can be!
