NetApp announces new Customer Configurable Notification Preferences and a webhook for Slack integration with the NetApp Instaclustr Maintenance Events System.

NetApp Instaclustr Maintenance Events gives customers visibility over cluster maintenance actions, cluster by cluster. Maintenance Events is applicable to all our Instaclustr managed platform technologies and outlines a schedule, status, and history of actions performed on the cluster that can include implementing customer requests, security patching, upgrading the host operating system, upgrading applications themselves, or updating NetApp Instaclustr tooling on the instances.

What’s new?

Previously customer notifications of cluster maintenance were always communicated via email to the maintenance contact email address specified for each account. The maintenance notification services have now been extended to allow customers to select their notification preference per account on the NetApp Instaclustr Platform. Webhook based Slack integration has been introduced for organizations that have adopted the Slack messenger platform as a key business communication tool. These features are available to all customers at no additional cost.

With Maintenance Event webhooks, notifications about cluster maintenance will be posted when integrated with your organization’s Slack app. NetApp Instaclustr customers have the power to choose to receive notifications via email or via webhook integration. If your organization is interested in using webhooks for any other applications, reach out to the NetApp Instaclustr Support team to let us know of other webhook targets that you want to use!

How does it work?

Customers can find and manage Notification Preferences in their account via the NetApp Instaclustr Console. You can then navigate to the NetApp Instaclustr organization or account settings to find Notification Preferences.

Note: Your first time use of webhooks integration with NetApp Instaclustr requires you to create and activate a webhook URL in your organization’s Slack application. Webhook integration to Slack won’t be available on the NetApp Instaclustr Console until you have created and activated your new webhook. Detailed guidance to setup webhooks for Slack is available within the NetApp Instaclustr Support Documentation.

Notification Preferences have been purposefully designed to manage customer environments with a large volume of clusters, and associated maintenance, for communication to be targeted, meaningful and useful to our customers. With that in mind, NetApp Instaclustr customers can choose whether communications should or should not be delivered for work that is associated with an existing support ticket.

  • Existing support tickets where the customer can choose to be notified either by email, webhook, or support ticket. Notification Preferences have been designed to make maintenance actions visible to the customer and notifications singular and clear, preventing duplicate notifications from being sent via both emails and support ticket updates.

Customer notifications for maintenance that relates to Scheduled Maintenance or Issue Investigation are issued depending on whether the expected impact is disruptive or non-disruptive to the customer application. Notifications will always be sent for maintenance that will be disruptive to the customer application that would require either a restart, downtime, or degradation of any customer application on any node. Otherwise, customers are in control of setting the recipient, or alternatively muting NetApp Instaclustr notifications for clusters with non-disruptive maintenance events. Notifications can be configured for email or a webhook.

  • Scheduled maintenance where NetApp Instaclustr Support has a pre-defined maintenance action that will be performed at a specific date and time.
  • Issue investigation where NetApp Instaclustr Support has identified an issue and is performing an investigation to determine the root cause of the issue.

For a step-by-step how to guide and more information on notification preferences go to the Customer Configurable Notification Preferences support guide. For customers who have not specified a Maintenance Contact email address, we will use your Support Contact.
