General Availability of PostgreSQL® 16 on the Instaclustr Managed Platform

Instaclustr is excited to announce the availability of PostgreSQL® 16, the latest major release on the Instaclustr Managed Platform.

PostgreSQL is the world’s most advanced open source, object-relational database system. Instaclustr is a leading provider of open source data solutions, helping customers avoid the risks of vendor lock-in and unsupported software.

PostgreSQL 16 brings significant performance improvements, including optimized query planning, parallel joins, and accelerated CPU processing. It enhances developer experience with expanded SQL/JSON support. Monitoring capabilities are enhanced with granular I/O metrics.

  • Performance Boosts: PostgreSQL 16 turbocharges existing functionality with optimized query planning, parallel joins, and efficient window functions. It also enhances bulk loading, achieving up to 300% faster performance. CPU acceleration using SIMD brings speed gains for ASCII, JSON, arrays, and subtransactions.
  • Developer-Friendly: PostgreSQL 16 embraces more SQL/JSON standards, adding constructors and predicates. It supports thousands separators and non-decimal integer literals. Developers benefit from new psql commands like \bind for parameterized queries.
  • Enhanced Monitoring: PostgreSQL 16 introduces pg_stat_io for detailed I/O metrics analysis. It records timestamps for table and index scans, improves auto_explain readability, and enhances query tracking accuracy.

The project is also adding additional logical replication options, and a few new ways to manage your own security if you are running your own PostgreSQL clusters. Instaclustr already offers streaming replication and strong cluster security, so these features are not relevant to our platform.

As with all PostgreSQL releases, there is more information available in the official release notes, as well as in the release notes for each version of the documentation. Please take particular note of the potential incompatibilities with earlier versions of PostgreSQL.

For customers who want to experience a PostgreSQL cluster on the Instaclustr Managed Platform, you can sign up and create a PostgreSQL cluster with these new versions through a free trial

As this is a major release, a dump/restore will be required. Please reach out to our Support staff if you would like to arrange the upgrade of your cluster.

The benefits of upgrading to PostgreSQL 16 in performance alone make this one not to miss! If you need even more power in your database, why not check out PostgreSQL on ANF.

Happy upgrading!
