Synthetic Transaction Metrics

The Synthetic Transactions metric group contains metrics used by Instaclustr to monitor the general health of a PostgreSQL cluster. The available metrics are:

  • Synthetic Read Requests
  • Synthetic Write Requests

These metrics will not be impacted by client or data issues unless they get to the point of impacting the general health of the cluster.

Synthetic Read Requests

As part of Instaclustr’s synthetic transaction monitoring, every twenty seconds all nodes in a PostgreSQL cluster will complete a set of read operations (on their respective copies of the same table). The time taken to complete these operations will be recorded.

The Average read latency in milliseconds metric uses this data to display the average time in milliseconds taken for local read requests to be processed by a node in the cluster.

The Number of Read request errors provides the number of errors that occurred when the synthetic read requests were last processed.

Synthetic Write Requests

As part of Instaclustr’s synthetic transaction monitoring, every twenty seconds the synthetic transaction client on the primary node in a PostgreSQL cluster will complete a set of write operations on an Instaclustr controlled table on that same node’s PostgreSQL instance. The time for these operations to be completed is recorded.

The Average write latency in milliseconds metric uses this data to display the average time in milliseconds taken for local write requests to be processed by the primary node in the cluster.

The Number of Write request errors provides the number of errors that occurred when the synthetic write requests were last processed.
